Lufthansa is in my opinion one of the best airlines in the world. I often fly LH because I have lots of United miles (they are partners with the Star Alliance) and also because my home airport (and yours), SFO, is a United and Lufthansa hub, therefore they together offer plenty of flights daily to Europe (via Germany).

Unfortunately, I don’t think there is any way that Lufthansa will be flexible and offer a refund. You need to look at the specific terms of the travel insurance or credit card coverage offered to see if this is covered. It sounds to me that in SJ’s case her husband was a travel partner and therefore named in the insurance policy.

I know that I can retrieve my Lufthansa booking number from United to try and reserve the seats through Lufthansa directly. My question is- has anyone had recent success with this? I am paying extra through United to have free seat selection as this is important to me and my travel companions.
