Give yourself a whole hour or more for the Japanese Garden. Walk slowly. Take it all in. It's supposed to be serene, and being on a timeline messes with that. The park itself is huge, so maybe set at least a half day aside if you can hang with nature.
Washington Park allows dogs but the usual rules apply: Dogs must be on a leash and clean up after them. Apart from that its a perfect place for the whole family.
