At least one person has died as a result of historic flooding in Brunswick County. An 80-year-old man died after his vehicle became submerged on a closed Brunswick County roadway, according to a news release from the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

As Brunswick County offices and services resume, several roadways in the county remain under water after potential tropical cyclone No. 8 swept up the coast earlier this week.

A section of U.S. 17 in Brunswick County that flooded during this week’s recent heavy rain will reopen to traffic today.

An eastern North Carolina man died while driving through a flooded road on Tuesday morning while a storm was drenching the area with rain. Just after midnight on Tuesday, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) responded to a report of a submerged vehicle on NC 211 near Stone Chimney Road in Brunswick County.

One of the hardest hit areas was Brunswick County, North Carolina, where dozens of roads are still flooded and many have collapsed. County officials have warned residents to avoid flooded areas and not to drive around barricades.

With the potential for tropical storm conditions on Monday, Brunswick County Schools has announced schools will be closed. The school district originally announced a two-hour delay, but decided Monday morning to close schools for students. It will be an optional workday for staff.
