This week, the NASA-funded Subsurface Water Ice Mapping project (SWIM) released its fourth set of maps, which the space agency is calling the “most detailed” since the project first began in 2017.
“The map is the perfect tool for planning a future visit to Mars, with an interactive interface where you can choose from different available base datasets,” Walter said in a statement.
Called Mars Ice Mapper, it's an orbiting spacecraft packing a powerful radar that will be used specifically for ice detection, based on the findings NASA already has on its map.

In the decades since, NASA has created a number of maps, including ones based on the planet’s mineralogy, and earlier this year, the US space agency released a detailed interactive 3D map of Mars.
