Homeowners across the country are getting letters in the mail this week as water users are required to investigate lead service lines. The notifications are a part of a final rule by the Environmental Protection Agency which requires all water systems to identify and replace lead pipes within a decade.

New drinking water standards from the EPA require Phoenix-area water providers to notify customers of potential lead exposure.

The city said warning letters were sent to people based off old records, so they're asking residents to test their pipes and notify the city either way.

The EPA required local governments to notify people of known or potential service lines containing lead, galvanized lines requiring replacement or unknown lines.
