The Pacific island nation of Kiribati was the first country to ring in 2025, its 133,500 citizens celebrating the new year at 5 a.m. ET on Tuesday.

People across the UK will have the rare opportunity to catch a sighting of the Northern Lights this evening, on the final night of 2024. The Met Office has said a coronal mass ejection left the sun early on December 29 and is expected to arrive on New Year’s Eve.

The northern lights may be visible in parts of the United States after sundown on New Year’s Eve, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
