This year's $100 million evening sale at Sotheby's London proved to be an interesting one, with lots of ups and downs. Lucian Freud's painting was a winner.

A Jean-Michel Basquiat painting rocketed to $110.5 million on Thursday night at Sotheby’s New York, smashing the artist’s previous record and carrying the house to a $319.2 million total.

That record was obliterated the following year, when Maezawa paid $110.5 million for one of Basquiat’s coveted large-scale skull paintings, also dating from 1982.

Works in the sale—dubbed The Contemporary Take —span prints and editions to unique works on paper, sculptures and paintings. They have estimates ranging from $4,000 to $1.2m.
