Valerie the dachshund has finally been reunited with her owners after surviving 540 days alone on Kangaroo Island in South Australia.

For 528 days, Valerie the miniature dachshund survived in the Australian wilderness by eating roadkill, evading venomous snakes and eluding the grasp of humans who wanted to rescue her.

The body of the female chocolate dapple dachshund, believed to be around two years old, was "clearly emaciated", said the RSPCA which is appealing for information about the incident.
