Hamas handed Edan Alexander, the last known living American hostage in Gaza, to the Red Cross ahead of his release to Israel on Monday, according to a statement from the militant group.

Hamas says it will release an American-Israeli hostage held in Gaza later in the day. The Palestinian militant group said Edan Alexander would be freed on Monday as a goodwill gesture to the Trump administration.

Alexander, believed to be the last living captive with US nationality in Gaza, was taken by Hamas during the 7 October attacks.

Pope Leo XIV appealed to the world's major powers for "no more war", in his first Sunday message to crowds in St. Peter's Square since his election as pontiff. The new pope, elected on May 8, called for an "authentic and lasting peace" in Ukraine and a ceasefire in Gaza and release of all Israeli hostages.
