Spanish authorities say two people have died in northeastern Spain in a wildfire that spread quickly before firefighters brought it under control.

As Europe endures a record-breaking heat wave this week, heat-related deaths have risen to nearly 80 with new data from Portugal. Previously, 10 deaths had been reported across Europe — including four in Spain, two in France, and four in Italy.

France's ecological transition minister, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, said the two deaths in her country were a result of "heat-related illness". It comes as France registered its second-hottest June since records began in 1900. June 2025 only trails behind June 2023, when the country also experienced intense heat.
