How can I put a border around my Christmas letter?
Word will display it a bit faded, but that's on purpose so it does not interfere with the main text. Before printing, check how it looks with Print > Preview: There's also some stuff in File > New from template.

Jan 26, 2016 · Every Word doc is based on a template. Go to the templates folder and open the Normal template. See if it has a border. I'm not sure where you templates are stored, but in Windows 7 Pro, they are in, C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates. Knowing Microsoft, they probably changed the path for Windows 8.

I use the Alt+= shortcut to insert equations both in "inline" and "display" mode, and enter most special symbols via escape sequences (like \lambda or \sqrt).

Word uses a table to lay out the labels. Select the table, or part of the table, and in the Table Layout tab of the Ribbon, click te Gridlines button in the Settings group. (If you keep Word->Preferences->View->Show->Text boundaries checked, you should also get to see some boundaries that will help)
