I just got a new set of desktop speakers and I've connected them via S/PDIF. They do work this way. The problem: The system sound will randomly stop working, though if I turn up the speakers I can hear a faint digital crackle. This happens with Firefox and Chrome. Primarily with Youtube and Facebook. Hasn't happened with Amazon Prime thus far.
