Camp Jackson is located near Columbia, South Carolina, and named for former President Andrew Jackson, housed 42,498 men in training for the 30th & 81st Infantrys and had a larger population than the city of Columbia.

Fort Jackson was created in 1917 at Camp Jackson as the US entered World War I. At the conclusion of World War I, Camp Jackson was shut down and the Camp was abandoned 25 April 1922, pursuant to General Orders No. 33, War Department, 27 July 1921.

The camp was retained after the first World War and was renamed Fort Jackson in 1940. Today it is the primary basic combat training center for the Army, responsible for the training of nearly half of soldiers.

World War II. The Army reactivated Camp Jackson in Sept 1939 after Germany invaded Poland. More than 500,000 men who served in World War II received some phase of their training at Fort Jackson. In July, 1940, the 8th “Pathfinder” Division was reactivated at Camp Jackson.
