The president didn't actually change "the flag", because there has never been a single fixed official shade for the French flag - the president made a choice about which version of the flag to use in particular situations, and in other situations people made other choices (the military used dark blues throughout).

Using the fleur-de-lis is thus utterly dumb to represent the language. In Belgium, French language has nothing to do with French monarchy or past colonial conquests.
