Red Salmon – Sockeye: Known to fishermen in Alaska as reds, the sockeye is historically our most valuable fish because of its high oil content and ability to hold its bright red flesh color. Russian River sockeye salmon use the mainstream river as well as its tributary streams to spawn.

There are two distinct red salmon runs which come up the Russian River. There is also a silver salmon run in the fall. The first run is the smaller of the two, and these fish are headed for Russian River and its lakes. The second run of reds go to both Russian lakes and Kenai lake.
Russian River sockeye or red salmon use the mainstem river as well as its tributary streams to spawn. Each female salmon lays between 3,000 to 4,500 eggs, which hatch in late winter. The fry emerge from the gravel in early spring and immediately enter the Upper Russian Lake.

There are several ways to rig for reds. The simplest is to crimp a couple of split shots on your line, about 24" above your hook. Tie a #2 coho fly at the terminal end, using a perfection loop; this knot gives you two passes of line through the hook eye, which gives you an advantage by reducing line wear as your offering bounces along the bottom.
Depending on the season, anglers who fish the waters of the Russian River will find sockeye, coho, and the occasional pink salmon, and resident fish species such as rainbow trout and Dolly Varden.
