Yasuke, African Samurai. Is the outrage justified?
Mar 20, 2021 · Even if Yasuke was "only" a 小姓 (page) or 道具持ち (weapons-bearer), that would make him a warrior on par with Ranmaru (at least before spring of 1582 when Ranmaru received a large fief). In contrast, the Toyokagami specifically says Hideyoshi started out taking care of Nobunaga's shoes when Nobunaga went hunting.
Yasuke and how Thomas Lockleys novel is revising history
Yasuke was at least in Nobunaga's retinue that attended to him. I'd say that at the very least Nobunaga regarded him as samurai. Correct. And this is where most of the problems stem from. Yasuke, who served Nobunaga as a maiden, was to be treated as a formal "samurai" like other vassals. And this is where Lockley is being disingenuous.

Is Netflix's Yasuke worth watching? : r/anime - Reddit
I like Yasuke and Saki as characters and I thought they did a good job with some of the supporting cast. I did think the antagonist was really rushed - I wasn’t sure what the motive was there. Personal thoughts on the whole Yasuke situation coming from
I think Yasuke was popularized abroad because of Lockley Thomas' book, and IGN also uses this as evidence that Yasuke was a samurai. It is strange that this is a 400-page book (written by Lockley Thomas), as Yasuke is a person for whom no documents exist, even if you scour all of his documents, they are only a few dozen lines or a few pages.

Jun 4, 2024 · Yes, Yasuke was a samurai, but "samurai" is simply a noble class, not necessarily the warrior most people think of when they think "samurai." That type of warrior is specifically refered to as a "bushi" (as in bushido) in Japanese, and …
AC Shadows gameplay. Yasuke COMPLETELY breaks the immersion.
Yasuke was an actual figure in Feudal Japan; he was an African samurai who served under Oda Nobunaga. Saying his presence breaks immersion overlooks the historical reality that Japan, even in its feudal era, had interactions with diverse cultures.
Why is everyone complaining about Yasuke but not William from …
The are only approx. 10 mentions of Yasuke in total. Only 3 from Nobunaga's chronicles, 2-3 from retainers, the rest are from the Jesuits. Yasuke has no last name. A samurai will be given a last name as it's a sign of honor. Unless that person has seen evidence that Yasuke was a samurai other than the existing records in Japan then that's false.

Playing as Yasuke in Japan just feels a bit out of place and more importantly raises questions about why the creative team decided to go this route. If they intend to use the cryptic history of Yasuke to build a story and genuinely thought he was the best possible choice for a protagonist then right on I’m all for it.
