Jan 20, 2002 · I do have pics of about every year up to '69. The heel started to transition in 1966 to what I would call a "plank heel" (very ugly), and by '68 to '69 had become a "block heel", where it was like one long block of wood where the neck joined the body.

Jul 19, 2019 · Most SGs have a 60s slim taper neck. Standards with the big pickguard generally have a fatter 50s neck. 2013 and 2014 SGJs had a 50s neck and no pickguard (that's the one I'd get if I got along with SGs).

Sep 5, 2019 · The image below from the web, shows major differences in older SG's neck tenon that seems to effect the neck shape. The tenons also effect the button location and CG.
Gibson's improvement for the SG neck heel
Dec 25, 2008 · I've read here and there that Gibson has been reinforcing the neck heel and also the neck-headstock joint. I think my guitar pretty much proves it: Given this new way to set the neck, even the strap button looks like a reiforcement... I think they should set that as a standard.

Aug 21, 2015 · Neck joint on my former 1964 Junior was stable and neck itself was not thin, but with a nice 59 profile. My newer 2000 SG 61 reissue (non Custom shop version) was much more unstable at the joint and the neck was very prone to weather changes (truss rod adjustement was often necessary).
