Jul 31, 2024 · I have a 2011 Santa Fe with torn inner CV joint boots. It seems the consensus is to forget the split-boot repair, let the joint deteriorate, and then replace. I’m pretty sure my boot tear is a new development - little time for contamination. And then, at 240,000 miles the car is near the end of it’s life cycle !

Sep 16, 2010 · Vehicles with solid rear axles, like most pick-up trucks, do not have CV joints in the rear. Other vehicles with independendently sprung rear wheels may have CV joints. My guess is your 4Runner does not have CV joints, but your Lexus IS probably does. You could crawl under and look. My AWD Subaru has CV joints at all four corners.

I thought of a non-hardening oil-resistant sealant (Permatex has one). I think this might end up clogging the CV joint if drawn inside, and might not resist grease anyways. I am stumped. Apr 6, 2008 · Let me make sure I understand on the movement. If I grab the shaft in the middle and can move it up and down that’s bad. I mean, without holding the inner joint at all. It seems like much of the movement is coming from where the cv joint goes into the transaxle. If I hold the inner joint and try to move the shaft, there is little movement if any.

You look for anything that is broken, bent, or missing parts from the suspension. In this inspection a torn CV boot is pretty easy to spot. It means the CV joint will fail and is certainly something to point out to the customer.
