Oct 29, 2009 · If you are shopping in the $1.000 price range look at the Big Green Egg. Lump charcoal lights fast and is ready to go in a fraction of the time it takes most gas grills to get hot. Most gas grills struggle to hit 600 degrees while a ceramic cooker with charcoal can hit 1100 at the grate. You won't ever look back after you sear your first steak.

Grilling is typically done over gas or charcoal and the heat comes from the bottom. Because charcoal and most good quality gas grills get hotter than most home broilers, grilling provides better searing.

It won't replace an outdoor grill (I've used Webers since '77, love em, I don't think I want to spend $$$$ for a Kalamazoo, but I saw a Primo demo with hardwood logs cooking yesterday, it was a total temptress ) For winter steaks, I go with a ridged cast-iron skillet over the Culi. Cleanup is a cinch.

(Note to Donna: While Weber has been a sponsor in the past, I have always felt free to make independent grill recommendations based on a griller's needs. I own many types of grills myself--some are Webers--many are not.)

I had a friend who had a fireplace and would put a small habachi style grill in the fireplace and grill all winter. If you do have smoke just create a draft through the kitchen if you can. I have also seen people mount small grills
